Yeah, been a long time.  There is a bunch of things going on, but I don’t feel compelled to put them up here.  Don’t know why.

Aiden graduated from Kindergarten a couple weeks ago.  That means next year we will have an “all day schooler”!  He turned 7 just a few weeks ago as well.  Where does that time go????

Paige finished round one of preschool, and gets the same teacher next year.  We are very excited because we all really like Mrs. M.  She does a great job with the kids, and the kids all love her.  Even Finn!

Mr. Finn is a walker now.  He doesn’t crawl at all anymore.  He’s also transitioned to the one nap a day routine.  Rough some days, but he does well overall.  Thankfully, he is sleeping through the nights.

Kim has been going through the process of becoming a surrogate.  That has been temporarily put on hold.  Couple more trips to the doctor, and a couple of procedures so far.  We’re waiting to see what happens, and hopefully her dream of being a gestational carrier will become reality.  I’d still like to beat the high holy hell out of the bastard that screwed up her surgery last summer.  This has been going on for almost a year now.

Me?  Well, I’m working now.  Got a job about a month ago now, and just finished week one on my own.  Not that it matters since my trainer didn’t do much training anyway.  I worked a full day today for the first time in years.  I’m beat!  Oh, and part of my job includes using a tablet PC, so I’ve got a new toy….a new toy that I can’t mess with.  Dang!

04-28-2010

It has now been just over a month since I last posted.  I’m still not smoking, as of now, but there have been a couple slips along the way.  Mostly it was just me in my old habit not paying attention.  Over the course of the last few months there has been something going on with Kim that (I think) I have failed to mention on here.  It was mainly due to the, “Let’s see what happens with it before I say anything” kind of thing.  Well, I guess now is a good enough time.

In the past 7 years, Kim has been pregnant 3 times.  She is one of the odd women that enjoys the pregnancy time.  She says it is almost “magical” time.  In that same time we have come to the agreement that 3 children of our own is all we wanted.  This kinda bummed Kim out a bit, but since I got snipped just over a year ago, yeah, it is sure not going to be mine.  Introducing, Surrogate Kim.

She started researching surrogacy quite a while ago, and really started researching late last year.  At least that’s when I really started noticing it.  She talked with quite a few agencies, requested information, and just made general inquiries.  Then she came across a few that she really liked.  From there she did their questionnaires for potential surrogates.  After all this time she narrowed it down to one that she really liked.  I’ll stick with her abbreviations for simplicity.   CS has gone through all the medical records for Kim as well as background checks (criminal and bankruptcy) for both of us.  We did the phone call “interview” with the social worker from the agency.  Then we were told we’d get emails for potential intended parents (IP’s for short).  Well, while on the phone with the social worker I made it clear that I’d prefer someone in the USA, but Kim also let it be known that she was not opposed to an international match as well.  Kim also talked about the time she spent in Germany as a child, and it was brought up that my family had once had a German exchange student.  Yeah, so “K” (the social worker doing the interview) dropped a little tidbit for us.  There was a couple in Germany that has been waiting for 6 months to find a surrogate.  That’s it.  Dangle the carrot.

Now, again, I didn’t want an international match, but really, something just felt okay with this one.  We rely on our gut instincts for some things around here, and this seemed like one of those times.  C.S.’s legal department went through to make sure the laws between here and Germany were complimentary, and apparently they were.  Once they cleared us legally, they sent us the info on the couple in Germany.  Now, keep in mind that the couple had already seen our information and said they liked us and wanted to move forward.  Then we got their info.  Kim was taking Paige to school when I checked her email (knowing something should be arriving very soon) and when I saw that email with the subject line reading “Potential Match”….yeah, I tried calling her to tell her to hurry up and get home.  We then both sat and read through the information and looked at the included pictures.  I don’t know why, but we didn’t send the reply immediately saying, “We like this couple.  We’d like to move forward.”  We figured we’d wait and do it the next day.  So Friday morning we talked about it a little bit more after Kim got home from work.  Then she went to bed.  I should have emailed while she was sleeping, but didn’t.  This poor couple had to sit and wait all weekend to hear an answer that we knew pretty much immediately after reading their profiles.

Monday morning they heard the news that we would like to move forward.  Next up, a conference call.  AWKWARD.  Kim likened this to a blind date.  Thankfully, I’ve never had to go on one before, but I can figure the uncertainty.  So this morning Kim pulled up a chair at my desk and we pulled open Skype.  After a few technical difficulties we had a video call underway.  However, there was some bandwidth problems and eventually we settled for a Skype voice call.  At least we got to see their faces for a few minutes first!

About the couple.  One of the things that Kim and I both agreed on was that the ideal couple would be composed of two gay men.  Why?  Not to discredit women, or anything like that, but the thought of being able to help a couple that could in no way, shape or form carry a baby themselves was ideal.  These two guys seem very happy, have a very stable support group consisting of friends, parents and I believe “Grandma” was tossed in there as well.

Once the call was done we sent an email to C.S. saying, yes, we like these two.  So, N & Y, we hope you liked us too.

What was I thinking???

I’ve smoked for almost 17 years….actually now that I think about it, it is closer to 18 years. Wow. I’ve been doing it so long that it is how I deal with stress, and I don’t have another method that seems to work. Yes, I decompress by playing Xbox online, and blowing stuff up is fun, but there are times where I seem to get so angry and frustrated while playing that it can actually make things worse. I have just (hopefully) completed the most stressful and pain-filled week of my life. I had actually started to quit smoking a couple weeks ago, but only went a couple days before starting back up. Then Tuesday, March 16, 2010 rolled around.

It was supposed to be an uneventful day. Paige had school in the morning, Aiden had school in the afternoon, Kim had a last minute Dr’s appointment scheduled to review some recent blood work results (she is still suffering from some issues from her gallbladder removal last summer). Nothing too horrible. It actually got better for me around lunch when the mail-lady dropped off my Captain Hammer t-shirt (if you haven’t watched Dr. Horrible’s Sing along blog you HAVE to!!!). Kim was off at her Dr. appointment when it arrived so I took a picture on my phone and tried to send it to her. No response, but I knew she’d been having issues with picture messages lately so I sent a regular text message. Still no response. Well, she was apparently on the phone with her mom when it came through. A little while later my phone rang and it showed Kim was calling. I just figured she was returning my call and to verbally respond to my text message. I was wrong.

Kim was hysterical. First thing that came to my mind was the doctor told her something horrible about the tests they had run. Then she calmed down slightly to let me know that she had just been rear-ended while sitting at a stop light. When Kim graduated high school she bought her own first car. Now she had been driving her parents’ old Volvo wagon, but she bought something all on her own. A brand new 1997 Toyota Tercel painted Coral Rose Pearl. It was pink, darker pink, but still pink. Anyway, this particular car has served many purposes since she got it. We drove it on our first date, it was the car we drove to Portland when we got married (most of our family was in the Portland area so it was easier than everyone coming to us), and of course it was the one that was “decorated” at our wedding, Kim drove it throughout college, and a few years later, I drove it throughout college. It has also served as our commuter car for work. With 120,000 miles after nearly 13 years, and so many memories in it, the Pink Turtle (as we called her) was part of the family. Kim and I had numerous discussions as to how we would NEVER sell her, and one day our kids could learn to drive a stick shift and use her for school commutes. Our kids love the Pink Car. If we were running an errand in town they would ask if we could take the Pink Car. She was indeed a beloved car to all of us, except maybe Finn because he’s only ridden in her a few times. She is now going to be leaving our family.

Not surprisingly, the insurance company is totaling it.  As soon as I understood Kim when she said she had been in an accident, I knew we were going to lost Pinkie (yes, we really do have lots of nicknames for her).  As a former employee of a Toyota dealership with a body shop, I’d seen Tercels that were much newer after accidents that were totaled.  These cars weren’t all that expensive when they were brand new, and parts were almost always more than the car was worth.  Especially if the airbags deployed.  I am now in discussions with two different people at the dumb-ass’s insurance company trying to get a “fair” settlement so that we can replace her.  Our home will never be the same.  I would also like to add that as sad as I am about the car, I really couldn’t care less about it until I knew for certain that Kim was going to eventually be okay.  I still ask her at least once a day how she’s feeling….just to be sure.

Then this week I was hit with something that was so incredibly hard to deal with that I smoked almost a pack in less than 20 hours.  I usually smoked about 1/2 pack a day, give or take, so this was a HUGE increase.  At one point I chain smoked 4 in a row, using the one I had just finished to light the next one.  I’ve done this before while I was drinking (why do beer and cigarettes go together so well????) and it isn’t a big deal because I have a drink to keep my throat wet.  I didn’t have a drink, and my throat was killing me after the second cig, but I kept going.  Then around 20 or so hours after I bought the pack and saw how few were left I decided I’d had enough.  I asked Paige to come help me (since Aiden was in school, although he would have been the more appropriate person to help me).  I walked into the bathroom and had Paige break a few remaining cigarettes and drop them in the toilet.  Then I flushed them away and walked out and put on a nicotine patch I had bought a couple weeks before.  I haven’t had one since.

I don’t crave them, but things are weird.  I forgot to get the mail yesterday until 8pm because it is something I normally do when I’m out smoking in the afternoon.  I stepped out the front door to go get the mail today (I remembered around 2pm) and immediately reached into my left front pocket to grab my lighter and pack, and realized there were no cigarettes.  First thing that came to mind was, “Crap, I’m out of smokes.”  Then after about 2 seconds I said to myself, “Oh yeah, I’m SUPPOSED to be out of smokes.”  Then just got the mail and came inside.  The only thing I’m having a hard time with is that I enjoyed smoking.  I enjoyed being on the front porch, alone with my thoughts.  I actually wrote a couple stories in my head (that I still need to write down) while smoking.  That I will miss.  I know I can go out there and chew a piece of gum or something, but it isn’t the same.  I’ve been smoking for more than half my life.  It was part of who I was, but it will not be a part of who I am and who I will be.  I want my kids to be proud of their daddy for stopping, and more importantly, I want them to know that smoking is NOT okay for them to do.

As Kim pointed out yesterday, I made it through the toughest part of the worst week of my life without a cigarette, which means I can make it through any other day without them.  That may be true, but the true test won’t be until we attend a family get-together.  All in all I can’t believe I quit smoking when things were at their hardest for me, and did it by breaking cigarettes I had in my possession.  I’ve never broken cigarettes I had when trying to quit.  I’d always wait until I didn’t have any left in the morning (meaning I’d have to go to the store first thing in the morning) and it never worked for longer than 8 months or so before.  I think this time it will be successful because of how I quit.  Scratch that.  I know it will be successful.

Tearing apart electronics

I love electronics.  If you know me, then you know this.  I love computers, phones, video game systems, pretty much anything technology related.  Being a video game geek I also own a couple video game consoles.  I have the Xbox 360, a PS3, and a PSP.  Had a Wii for a while, but sold it since it sat around most of the time.  Still debating about picking up another Wii since the kids are getting older and could use it more, plus Kim and I had bowling nights.

With the video game systems there is one that is always being poked at for being a problem child.  The Xbox 360 has been plagued with issues almost from its launch day.  I pre-ordered and got a “launch” console (a 360 from when it was released).  I played this console for nearly 2 years until I sold it to get a Xbox 360 Elite.  At the time, the Elite was the only one that had the HDMI output, and I wanted it.  For those that don’t know HDMI carries the audio and video signals digitally on one cable, much like a coax cable carries the audio and video in analog format.  The difference?  Compare VHS and DVD.  And since our TV at the time had a couple of open HDMI inputs, I figured, “Why not?”.  I have now owned an XBox 360 for over 4 years and have never had a single problem with it.  Well, not major anyway.  I did have it overheat a couple times, but it seems to be doing MUCH better since I blew out all the dust.

The Wii we had for a couple years.  We didn’t get one until it had been out for a long time, so the kinks should have been worked out, but no.  After about 9 months it went back to Nintendo because the DVD drive (does it use a DVD drive??) quit working.  It was replaced and worked beautifully when I sold it (and it is still working to my knowledge).

The PS3 we have now had for 2 years.  We’ve had issues with it recognizing DVD’s we wanted to watch.  Sometimes it wouldn’t work, other times it was no problem.  This has been going on for about 6-8 months now.  Blu-Ray and games worked fine, but regular DVD’s sometimes wouldn’t.  Well, almost 2 years to the day from purchase Aiden popped in a Tom & Jerry DVD to watch when something new happened.  I got the “Yellow Light of Death” (YLOD).  What cracks me up is all the PS3 fanboys poking fun at the 360 fanboys (like me) about how the Red Ring of Death (RROD) that the 360 gets happens all the time, and PS3’s don’t have this problem.  Yeah, yeah you do.  I know because it happened to me.

Ok, so I’m staring at the YLOD.  Power off, power on, trying anything.  Not working.  Can’t even eject the DVD.  Now, I’m well outside of warranty so there will be no “Goodwill” repair from Sony.  They want $150 to send me a refurbished PS3 after I send in mine.  All of Aiden’s game saves from Ratchet and Clank would be gone.  So I start browsing online.  I found a guide to fix the YLOD, and figured, why not?  I could always send it in to Sony if it didn’t work.  At worst, I’d be out the $7 I spent on the Arctic Silver thermal paste plus the $150 for the refurb.  At best, I’d spend $7 for the thermal paste and we’d continue on while giving Sony the finger.  On we go…

Here it is.  Unaware of it’s impending doom.  The tear-down.  For the record, this is the 40GB PS3 model#CECHG01.  I know, it is the “cheap one” but I didn’t care.  It was the cheapest Blu-Ray player out at the time.  Plus, it has built in Wi-Fi and gets regular updates (so if the BD Live gets an update, I get it).  The model makes a difference, I know for certain because the guide I looked at was for a 60GB PS3 and it was slightly different internally than mine was.

First thing I had to do was remove the warranty sticker that covers a rubber plug that allows me to get into the console.  I was out of warranty anyway, and I’ve always wanted to do this….so I cut the warranty sticker so I could access the plug.  (Sorry, didn’t adjust the flash until later)

I think my warranty is voided now

So, behind the rubber plug was a “Tamper proof” Torx screw (size T10).  These look like normal Torx head screws, but in the center there is a little piece of metal that sticks up so that you can’t use a standard Torx, you need one with a hole in the center.  Luckily, Puma had one from the times he’d disassembled a 360 controller and he let me borrow it.  Come to find out, it was the wrong size hole for the piece of metal.  Out came one of my small flathead screwdrivers and I just busted that little metal piece off.  I now just use a normal T10 Torx.

The top cover came off once the screw was out.  I found that this top cover is partially transparent, and serves no other purpose than to cover the main top cover and make the PS3 look pretty.  Mission accomplished.  I still think the PS3 is better looking than the 360.

PS3 with the "Pretty Panel" removed

I opted to remove the hard drive at this point.  The guide didn’t show it removed until later, but it is so w quick and easy I just did it.  One cover and one screw then slide the hard drive out.

Next was removing the screws from the main top cover.  There were eight or so screws, most long with a couple shorter.  I marked on the cover itself with a Sharpie so that I knew where the short one went.  Figured I better just to be safe.  Once those were all removed, there is a locking tab on the top right section (referring to picture directly above) and a hinge-lock on the front.  Simply use a screwdriver tip to release the lock-tab, and then lift the panel from the back towards the front and it comes right off.  Once the top panel is off it looks like this….

Ok, so looking at the picture directly above you have: the Blu-Ray drive on the right side, the power supply in the upper left and the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth daughter-boards bottom left with a one wire connection to another board at the upper middle.  I know the daughter-boards are for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth because I forgot to plug the ribbon cable in the first time I put it together and neither Wi-Fi nor Bluetooth worked.  Whoops.  All in all I tore it down three times the first night.  The last time was because I forgot to plug the Blu-Ray drive back in after fixing the Wi-Fi and BT board issue.

The Blu-Ray drive just lifts out here, but there is a plug into the mother board that you must undo first.  This is actually held in place with screws that are holding on the top main cover as well.  Makes it easy I guess.  The power supply actually has five screws in it.  One at each corner, with two in the lower right corner (closest to the Blu-Ray drive and the daughter-board).  Before lifting out the power supply, make sure you untape the wire running between the daughter-boards.  The bigger daughter-board has two screws (one on either side) and a good ol’ ribbon cable.  The smaller board has only one screw.  With the power supply and Blu-Ray drive removed it is easy to see the screw for the small board.

Now we are down at the main fan assembly/heatsink clamshell that encases the motherboard (what I needed to get at).  There are again, various screws to deal with.  Sadly, I didn’t take a picture here.  At this point the you must unscrew the power supply ground wire (I put the screw back in its spot) and you can lift the whole thing out of the bottom tray.  The back cover (where the plug and various A/V ports are) comes up with the clamshell assembly and then pops off.  Here’s where it was fun the first time.

Opening the clamshell on my 40GB PS3 was quite different than the 60GB I saw online.  First, make sure you unplug the fan from the motherboard!!  Then I had to bend the metal tabs away from the A/V ports and there were two small metal dowels that went through the whole assembly.  Plus, the bastard was damn near super-glued together.  I didn’t want to break it, but it took a decent amount of force to separate it.  I finally got it apart and this is how it looked.

Finally, I set to work “reflowing the solder”.  First I cleaned the old thermal paste off the processors and the heat sink assemblies.  I used isopropyl alcohol, but would have preferred ArctiClean (from Arctic Silver).  My local computer shop didn’t have any, so I used what I could.  Then I used a heat gun (not the best method, I know) to reheat the area around the processors.  The guide I used suggested 350 degrees.  I plan on getting a heat-gun with a digital readout next time.  I had to use an oven thermometer this time.  Not very accurate, but again, I did what I could.  I’m impatient and wanted to get right into this.  Planning ahead wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Once I finished with the heat gun on both sides I reapplied thermal paste and reassembled.  Once I had done the three tear-down and reassemblies, it worked beautifully.  For two days.  Then I tore it all down again and re-did it, but heated it for longer.  It has now been going strong for a week.

I want to thank Gilksy for his guide.  Without his guide I never would have tried this, and would have sent it back to Sony.  You can see his video how-to on youtube.  Here is a link for step 1 (which has links to the rest of the steps).

Stained Skin

It has been a busy while for us around here. No excuse really since Kim has been able to not only update her blog, but update her second blog as well. Yeah, I’m slacking, but here I come with a couple of new posts!!

First up, my new tattoo. Kim and I both like tattoos. Okay, I think it is safe to say that I love tattoos. With the addition of my newest one I now have twelve tattoos. Granted, I have 4 rather small ones, the others aren’t tiny. So, in order of appearance:
1) My partial lunar eclipse came first. There is a meaning behind it, but I don’t tell people. Kim may be the only one that actually knows the meaning beyond me.  This picture was taken by the tattooist just after completion.

2) My dragon.  I don’t have a picture of this one.  This was a going away present from a few good friends at the car dealership.  Only regret I have is that I didn’t get it done bigger.  I’m going to see if Sean can work something in around it to bulk it up so that it is closer in size to the Koi.

3) The next time I got tattooed was when I flew back to Oregon when Rob got back from the Middle East.  I didn’t mess around.  I got five tattoos done in one sitting.  It helps that most of them were small.  I got my ring finger tattooed with the word “Family”.  I don’t wear my wedding ring so this was my permanent ring.  I also had a Scooby Doo tattoo done for my Grandma Vivienne.  She always used to send UPC’s away for things, and one time she sent away for a pair of Scooby Doo underwear for me.  For that reason, I own a pair of Scooby Doo’s now.  His tag usually has “SD” on it, but the tattooist changed it to “VS” for my Grandmother’s initials.  I also had a spider tattooed for my Grandma Madge.  She used to play this game with her hand as a spider and it would run across the counter at us.  We’d smack the “spider” and squash it.  My kids LOVE this game with me now.  I had “MN” put on the body of the spider for Grandma’s initials.  Next was a couple of Chinese characters.  I’ve had them verified by a co-worker that was in the USA on a work/student Visa from China.  They do indeed say what they were supposed to.  On my right top-wrist I have the character for “Family”.  Obviously, family is important to me.  Then on the inner part of my left upper arm (near the tickle zone) I have the character for “Love”.  This one is about six inches tall and on a “sensitive” spot.  I felt a couple pinches, but mainly just had fun watching her work.

4)  I took a little break in between tattoos, but rest assured, I was chomping at the bit to get back in there.  This is also where Kim and I met Sean at Blackcat.  He is the only one that will ever tattoo me again as long as he doesn’t retire or move.  Next up came my older two kids’ names.  I found a font that I really liked on Word 2002.  Once I had found the font I liked and printed up a copy of the kids’ names in it I started to canvas the tattoo shops around here.  I hadn’t been tattooed here, and I wasn’t too thrilled with the guy that did Kim’s Celtic bracelet.  Yes, it turned out great (we had my tattooist in Ashland draw it up for Kim) but the guy was just off.  He had obviously smoked about a million too many bowls of weed too many.  Not only that, but when I took in the names to show him what I wanted he kept pushing me to not use that font and to let him do the names in graffiti style.  Now, when I was 18 I would have said, “Sweet! Let’s do it!”, but I’ve grown up since then.  I didn’t want my kids’ names to look like they’d been tagged on me.  I wanted them to look nice to show the respect my kids deserve.  We had driven to most of the shops before Kim’s tattoo, so we knew where NOT to go.  Then we stumbled upon this little shop.  It is like a hole-in-the-wall restaurant.  They aren’t the biggest, or the fanciest (one here had a Koi pond in the shop), but most of the time you’re going to get the best service and product available anywhere.  Blackcat Tattoo and the owner Sean have earned out business for as long as he is in business…and we have blank skin.  He took one look at the names in the font I liked and said, “I like this font!  This will be easy to work around if you want to add things to it later.”  So, our relationship with the shop started.

Next up came the nurse.  I had been trying to decide what to get next, but hadn’t quite figured it out.  Then, Kim shocked me.  She said, “Why not get a nurse pin-up tattoo?”  I love my wife.  I always liked pin-up’s (what guy doesn’t???) but didn’t think I’d get one out of respect for my wife.  But since she suggested it….okay!  I already knew which one I wanted…I just had to find a picture.  Once I found the picture, I printed it and took it to Sean to setup my appointment.  I found out that, for the first time ever, I was going to have to break up my tattoo into two appointments.  One for line work, and one for the color.  First trip was about three hours, and it looked like this…

After a couple weeks of healing, I went back for another 2 1/2 hours for the color work.  I’d like to say that coloring the hair sucked.  Up in the knee area it is apparently a little tender (???) and he had to make multiple passes with the color.  He said he would put the needles in, drag them up and outward as he went to shading?  I don’t recall exactly, but it sucked.  In the end, it was worth it to me though.  I made her a “strawberry blonde” because, well, who doesn’t like a redhead?  Kim agrees.

Then, came Finn.  Tank joined us last March and I knew I had to get his name added as soon as possible.  Called up Sean and he enlarged the font to compensate for being on my leg.  I wanted to make sure that Finn’s name took up a good portion of my leg since Aiden and Paige’s names took up a good portion of my arms.  I was able to get Finn’s name tattooed in less than 2 weeks after his birth.  I should have timed it better however since I got snipped the next day (no more kids for me!) and couldn’t lotion it very well.  Not smart, I know, but it still looks great!

Finally, Christmas 2009 rolled around.  Kim gave me money for tattoo work for Christmas.  Told you she was awesome.  I decided to go with the Koi that I’ve wanted for a while, and after debating, it ended up on my upper arm.  My right arm was feeling a little naked compared to my left, so it was time.  Again, Sean informed me that we had to break up the work into a line day and coloring day.  The crappy part is that because of his schedule I had to wait a month between the appointments!  At the end of day one, my arm was sore, but not horrible…and it looked great even without the color!

And just a few days ago, I got to go down and get it all colored in.  I’m thrilled with it (hence the long ass post about my tattoos) and again would like to confirm that Sean is the sole tattooist for this family.  I would also like to thank Kim again for this present.  I LOVE IT!!!!

I really was going to post another blog today, but I think I’ll wait until tomorrow.  This one is long enough on its own!!

Back to books

I haven’t read a book for pleasure in probably 20 years. That changed this past week. About two weeks ago the whole family loaded up and headed to the mall. We originally went so that we could visit our Disney Store that would be closing this month. We had the stroller, and to make it easier to get in, I suggested we enter via the Borders Bookstore due to the push button doors. Kim was a little surprised and excited. Usually I don’t suggest her going into a bookstore….EVER. It’s like sending me into an electronics store or into a shoe store that carries Jordan’s. There was no turning back now.

After about 40 minutes we were done, and I had purchased the first book for pleasure in a VERY long time…maybe ever. I think when I was younger and reading a lot my parents bought my books. Then there was the library. The library is almost a bad word in our house. Kim loves books. LOVES books. That’s why we don’t go to the library. She loves books, but doesn’t like to give them back. The library kinda frowns upon that. So, we buy books.

So, the book I bought is/was about an assassin. I bought it for that reason. I loved the game Assassin’s Creed and I generally like any game like it. Hitman, Splinter Cell, etc. Kim calls them my “Sneaky bastard” games. So, I started reading on Thursday. I thought I’d bitten off more than I could chew. My first book back and it was 670-some-odd pages, and it was the first of three in the series. I finished it in 3 days. Could have finished it in one if I’d sat down to read more, but I didn’t. I’m now halfway through book #2. Kim is excited. Actually, that’s an understatement. She is thrilled that I started reading again.

Next up? That would be an E-Reader of some sort for me. See, Kim loves books. She loves the way they feel, the feel of the pages, the feel of the printed words, the smell of the books. Everything about them. And pretty much those same things are what I DON’T like about books. A couple months ago I brought up the idea of getting Kim a Kindle from Amazon or a Nook from Barnes and Noble. She declined due to the previously mentioned reasons for loving books. However, she is now suggesting that we “get one for [me] that she can ‘borrow’ when we go on trips”. Uh huh. Well, it is actually a good idea for the most part. I’d like one because I wouldn’t have to deal with the things I don’t like about books, and I’d get a new gadget. Gadgets are cool. So now, it is a matter of deciding which one.

This past Saturday we went to the bookstore to check out the Nook in person. I don’t like it. It is too small for my tastes. It is also quite slow. I played with a Kindle when my mom came out to visit a few months ago, but didn’t really like that either. It has a keyboard on it (basically) and that just makes it bigger than it needs to be. So as of now I’m waiting to see what the HP Slate and the Apple iPad are like. I think the tablet will be the way to go for me. Bigger screen, and more than just an E-Reader. The HP Slate is a full-blown computer in a tablet format. The iPad is an oversized iPod Touch. I’m leaning more towards the HP Slate due to the fact it is an actual computer and can multi-task. Plus, I won’t have the temptation to get the 3G data plan that the iPad would bring. Since neither is out yet, well, I guess I will just wait. Unless someone that works for HP or Apple is reading this. In which case, feel free to send me a pre-production model to test for you. I’d love that. Then, I could put up a review on here. Maybe start serving a better purpose than a location for my incomprehensible babbling. I’m off to bed. Kim’s working tonight and I got stuff to do tomorrow!

Up on the soap box I go…

So, Haiti is in a bad place right now and many have stepped up to donate to rebuilding.  I question how much will actually go to those in need, and how much will make it into the pockets of the corrupt.  This morning I got to sleep in, and was woken up by Kim softly telling me to get up.  All in all I should have been in a great mood, but I was still a little grumpy and the filter on my mouth was not working.  Enter my soapbox….

Someone (who’s name I will decline to mention) had their Facebook status with something along the lines of; ‘Why don’t celebrities do more in a time like this?  They could make such a big difference in Haiti if they would donate some of their money (which they can spare) to help others?  I heard of one celebrity that only donated $100,000 and that made me mad.  Celebrities should do more.  Repost this so that we can get the word out.’

Okay, first off…who the hell are we to determine what someone else does with their money?  I feel sorry for ANYONE that tries to tell Kim and I how to spend the money we have available.  I will tear you a new one and not feel guilty about it in the least.  Yes, to most, celebrities are a different breed.  They aren’t normal people, they are celebrities and are therefore held to some higher standard than the rest of us.  They are required to help others in need, we aren’t.  Sorry, but this is bullshit.

Celebrities earn their money just like us.  Yes, they make a lot more than we do, but I’d like to see Joe Schmoe on the street pull off a performance like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean, or play basketball anywhere near the level Kobe Bryant does, or hit a 100 MPH fastball like A-Rod can (yes, I’m a Yankees fan so there WILL be a Yankees reference).  So what if they get paid millions of dollars for acting or playing a sport??? They are good at what they do, and that is why they get paid millions of dollars.  Do I agree with their payscale?  No, I don’t, but that is the way the sporting and acting worlds have gone.  I still think nurses, firefighters, and police are severely underpaid considering what they do for us on a daily basis, and don’t even get me started on those in the armed forces.  How much would it cost to put YOU in a place where you could be: shot at or blown up by something everyday?  Think that combat pay is enough to entice you?  Me neither.

Then there was the comment about a celebrity that “only” donated $100,000.  That made you mad? Really?  That a celebrity was even willing to donate that much?  How much have you donated?  How many people do absolutely nothing?  Does that make you mad?  I haven’t donated any money?  You mad at me?  Tough shit.  We have one income, three kids, a house payment, car payments, student loans, and our kids would like to eat and have clothes.  Sure we may have a little to spare, but we like things too.

Take a look at yourself before you bitch….it’ll make you look a lot less like an idiot.

It has been a great long while.  I know…I’m a slacker.  I’m not sure what changed, but it seems like I can’t retain the things I want to blog about.  But there are a few things that have started happening….

Biggest news: Finn is mobile.  He started “crawling” a full 2 months earlier than either of the other two.  The reason it is in quotations is because he isn’t actually crawling.  Instead of being on all fours, Finn has opted to basically do the splits and pull himself around.  I can only imagine that the legs are being utilized as stabilizers so that he doesn’t fall forward or backwards while moving.  I also believe he is doing it this way (and the others didn’t) because of the hardwood floors.  Aiden always had to deal with mostly carpet on the main floor, and Paige started the standing/walking literally when we got the hardwoods installed.  We have a great picture of her standing in the emptied out living room just prior to leaving the house for a few days to have the floors installed…she is very unsure of her balance.  Anyway, Finn is now also pulling himself up on things and cruising around the coffee table.  We’ve rearranged the living room to maximize play space for the kids, and give Finn the most available space to roam.   However, you can usually find him: playing with the DirecTV receiver, playing with either Kim’s purse or his diaper bag in the dining room, or making a dash for my office door (if its open) so that he can get under my desk and play with the powerstrip….since it has the pretty red power light.  Touch on this in a minute.

Next big news?  Aiden is reading up a storm.  He started just a little while ago, but he is the one reading bedtime stories for the most part.  Tonight was the first night he had me read a book in a while.  He wasn’t comfortable reading a big book (although I know he could have read it easily), but filled in things and corrected me a couple times.  So I like to ad-lib occasionally… whoopee.  He is still doing well in school, and we should be getting his next report card on Monday.

Paige is baffling.  How we ended up with a girly-girl is beyond me.  She is in love with being a princess, and big poofy party dresses.  She now has 2, with Mama fixing up another one for her.  She requests to wear them almost daily.  She loves having “pretties” in her hair to go with the dresses too.  She is going to be trouble….I just know it…..

I had a pretty big day last week.  For the first time since before I graduated, I had a job interview.  This meant getting a haircut and shaving my face.  I had cut my hair and shaved my face for the wedding I performed back in late August.  It was untouched since then.  Yes, it was long.  So, I was able to talk Paige into going with me and getting a little trim, and ONLY a little trim.  She was having NO part in a drastic haircut.  She informed me on the way to the salon (yes, I went to a salon) that she has to have long hair so that others “would know she’s a girl!”  We then had the discussion that sometimes boys have long hair, too.  Then I started on the earrings.  I have six, and I wanted to make sure she knew that boys can have those too.  She was a little disappointed that Daddy and Mama both have six holes, and she only has two.  I told her when she was older she could get more holes in her ear.

Back to the job interview.  It was an entry level position with a market research company here.  One of two market research companies here.  These jobs do not open up often, and they are pretty competitive.  How competitive?  I was one of 121 (yes, one hundred and twenty one) applicants.  From that, 46 were instantly rejected due to lack of cover letter or typos in their resume.  So, that 75 of us.  From that group of 75 there about 10 chosen for interviews.  Yes, I was one of about ten to get an interview.  I’ll say it now, I don’t interview well.  I’ve been told by previous bosses and employers that I could sell ice to an Eskimo in the middle of winter.  Again, I admit, I can sell things….but I despise having to sell myself.  That may be part of the problem.  In any case, I’m still a stay at home Daddy.  I’m sad that I didn’t get the job, but thrilled I still get to be home with my kids.  I’d still love to find a way to stay at home AND earn an income.  For the record, I have started writing one book, and have ideas for a few children’s books.  Here’s hoping.

Next up, Kim.  You may recall that Kim had a less than stellar surgical procedure done last summer.  She is still getting bloodwork drawn for tests regularly, and things still aren’t back to normal.  However, she has been cleared for another pregnancy.  No, not for us.  I can’t do that.  When the doctor cleared her on Tuesday, he made the comment about how “one of us was planning on another one” since I had made contradicting statements.  Thankfully, Kim replied with “It wouldn’t be ours”.  Honey, thank you again for not saying “It won’t be his”.  I can only imagine the confusion for the doctor had THAT come out.  Yes, Kim may get to fulfill her desire to surrogate.  She may only get to surrogate once, if at all.  Yes, I am okay with this for a few reasons.  1) She is a happy pregnant woman.  She LOVES being pregnant and doesn’t get mean.  2) It is her body.  I have no right to tell her what she can and cannot do with her body.  I can voice my opinion, and let her know if I’m uncomfortable with something, but I refuse to be the bastard that tries to tell her outright that she cannot do anything.  3) Holy crap!  They pay you HOW MUCH???? 4) There will be no midnight feedings.  I love all three of my kids, but I do NOT miss getting up multiple times a night to feed them.  In fact, I am very much looking forward to not having diapers to change anymore either.

So there you have it.  I think I’ve caught you up to speed, but I know I’ve missed things in there.  Like I just remembered that Aiden has substituted Spanish words in for the English equivalent while reading (thankfully he lets me know that “its the Spanish word for [...]”

Oh yeah, was going to touch on Finn and the powerstrip again.  In my last blog in November I posted something about my router needing to be reset every couple days, and that D-Link needed to update it NOW!  Well, they haven’t officially done that yet.  I did find a beta of their updated firmware and installed it.  Since I installed it (about a month ago) it has never needed to be reset.  Thankfully, it is stable and performing pretty well (only a small reduction in my Wi-Fi reception area???).  I am happy.  One day, Finn decided it needed a reboot.  He scooted in here while I was working on something, and flipped the powerstrip’s “Master Power” switch.  Hmmmm…yeah, I guess that almost two weeks had gone by without a reboot.  Okay.  It has continued to work perfectly…..

1-8-2010

There are many funny things that happen with kids….daily.  Random things they say, new challenges they attempt, or they discover new things in this world.  I see these things with all 3 kids daily, but I don’t stop to write them down.  I know they are important, and we will wish we had them when the kids are older (like Aiden swearing that the “seed the daddy plants in the mommy to grow a baby MUST be shipped in a box”) but I don’t take the time to write them down.

I should be blogging at least once a day, but it isn’t happening.  Usually when I get a few free minutes I fire up the X-box for some Call of Duty online.  It is a stress reliever, and stress adder, but the big thing is that it gets me out of the realm of reality that I still have no job.  I do have a job interview on Monday, and hopefully this unemployment will end.  I would much rather be at home with the kids, but I’d much rather Kim to be able to take an A-day from work without worrying about the bills.

11-22-2009

Wow…been a while.  Last post was on the 9th.  Not really surprised it has been that long due to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 being released on the 10th.  Yes, I’ve been spending far more time than I should be playing.  It is highly addictive, while being both quite fun and quite frustrating at times.

Kim’s birthday is soon.  Wednesday, actually.  Technically my shopping is already done since her present arrived a month or so ago (her new netbook).  Thankfully, she still loves that little thing, and I must say it is a pretty impressive little thing.

The kids are still doing great.  Plugging away in school and constantly talking at home.  Seems like we’ve been feeding them “Talk all the time” along with their food.  They seem to talk up until they fall asleep…Paige even continues to do so in her sleep at times.

So, I’ve got Windows 7 Pro installed (been a while actually) and I’m quite happy with it, but then again, I was happy with Vista Business as well.  Finally found an issue last night.  My built in webcam doesn’t work.  Worked fine in Vista, but nothing in 7.  Still toying with it, but using my Xbox 360 cam for the time being.  Also found out that my built-in mic didn’t work, but that was because I didn’t update the drivers for 7.  Did that this morning and it is actually working better than before.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.  Picked it up at midnight and came home and immediately started playing.  Funny thing was while we were waiting in line prior to midnight release, Puma mentioned that he’d start playing as soon as the update was done.  He was joking that this brand new game that hadn’t even released yet was going to need an update.  Sadly, he was right.  First thing I got when I put the disc in was the update prompt.  Ok, done.  No big deal.  Then came the issue with my NAT.  A couple years ago I made sure that my Xbox 360 was put outside of the firewall of my router (DMZ) so that my NAT would be “Open”, and therefore, able to match up with anyone on Xbox Live easily.  Apparently when I switched from DSL to Cable (for 2 months) then back to DSL something changed.  Well, DSL the first time was 1.5 Mb and now it is 12Mb.  With that we got a new modem.  Long story shorter…fixed it.  Course, now my $180 “Gaming Router” needs to be reset every couple days thanks to the “Updated Firmware”.  Hey, D-Link…the DGL-4500 needs a STABLE firmware!!!!! PRONTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Over the last week I’ve had ideas come and go through my head about things to blog about.  Sometimes it is in response to Kim’s blog, and other times it is because some random event has triggered my brain on a topic.  Sad part is I usually get about 1/2 of what I’d like to say in my head along with “I gotta go put this up”….then…..I forget.  Once it is gone it is GONE.  Sucks.  I think Kim and I need to set a time at night after the kids are in bed for us to both sit down and blog.

Last bit here….anybody know how to go about getting a children’s book published?
