Pure chaos!!!

There are seven children in our house under the age of six.  Yes, that’s right SEVEN kids all aged six years old or younger!  Thankfully, with four adults it is still under the 2-1 ratio….barely.  This weekend brought a treat for our family.  We had family come to visit!  My little sister Kelsey brought her four kids (in her defense, she had twins) and our Mother out for a weekend visit.  Aiden and Paige were so excited that they stayed up on Thursday night until they arrived.  By the time the dust settled the kids didn’t get to bed until about midnight.  WAAAAAAAAAAAY past their bedtime.  We usually have them in bed by 8 PM.  Kim went nuts because of this.  The routine of picking up toys and relaxing in quiet were thwarted by the pending arrival of family.  You can read her blog HERE.  Always fun to see things from her perspective.

The kids have been having a great time playing with their cousins.  Aiden’s best bud is Brogan.  They are about a year apart in age, but you’d never know it.  One of the best things happened tonight.  We had Aiden walking around singing in Spanish and Brogan was walking with him singing in Chinese.  Brogan is in a Kindergarten class that is a Chinese version of Aiden’s.  Good times.  Paige has been having fun playing with the twins Elle and Asher.  They are a bit younger than her, but just a little bit.  Thankfully, we didn’t have a repeat of the last time we stayed at their house.  The sight of Elle with her hands around Paige’s throat because they’d seen enough of each other was scary, and definitely enough for one lifetime.  They are getting along great this time around.  It is also fun to see Finn and Everett interact.  There is only a couple weeks difference in age, but there is a big difference in size.  Pun intended.  Everett is long, but feels like a feather compared to our Tank.  Let’s just say that Everett probably won’t be a football training partner for Finn…just like Aiden won’t be.

Gram is just hanging out, reading, relaxing, and cleaning.  For Mom the “cleaning” falls under “relaxing” I guess.  Kelsey is trying to play ringleader, and I’ve been consumed in my office more than normal this weekend.  Thanks to the generosity of Puma, I spent a majority of Friday afternoon installing Windows 7 Pro on my laptop.  I bought it with XP Pro, then went to Vista Business, and now I”m on the newly released Windows 7 Pro.  Yes, I know I said that already, but it is new and I’m still a bit excited.  So far it is similar to Vista, but there are little things that I’m still playing with and learning.

I’m still waiting on the Yankees to finish on the series with the Angels.  Seriously…any time now Yankees.  Girardi.  Yes, I know I have no experience playing in the majors, or managing a major league baseball team (let alone the New York Yankees), but come on.  The way you go through your bullpen is crazy.  Using Joba Chamberlain as a set-up man for your set-up man?  Here’s a thought…you could save him in case the game goes into extra innings (like they all seem to in this series, Game 5 was fun though).  That way we don’t end up with a guy pitching that has LIMITED experience in the majors, let alone the ALCS.  Tonight’s game was rained out.  I’ve already set the DVR to record tomorrow with a three hour extension.  Finish it off so there is a little break between the ALCS and the World Series.  I beg of you!  We NEED another championship!

Off the soapbox now.

And so Fall 2009 soccer season ends

Today was the last game for Aiden and Paige for the Fall.  We were a little sad, but also relieved.  Paige was finally enjoying and understanding what she needed to be doing during her games.  She is the only one that consistently runs and wants to play on her team.  Well, I guess there is that other kid, but he wants to kick the ball in a straight line regardless of the direction he is facing.  I’m frustrated at the team she is on because the coaches don’t take it seriously, the parents of the other kids don’t seem to take it seriously, and all in all has been frustrating for us.  She is enjoying herself, and that’s all that matters.

Today was cold.  Quite cold.  Aiden’s game was first, and just like the first three of the season, we ended up playing most of the game 4 vs 5.  I think the other team scored A goal.  Yeah, one.  When they had an extra man for 3/4 of the game.  In the opening couple of minutes our team was up 3-0.  Well, Braden was up 3-0 on the other team.  He is the smallest one on the team (yes, he’s smaller than Aiden) and man can that kid get up the field in a hurry!  When Aiden got into the game we were all a bit disappointed to see him playing back on defense.  He and Austin both played defense most of the time, and they were BORED.  The ball almost never went into our backfield.  There is video of Aiden dancing in the goalie area because he was trying to keep himself entertained.  Partway through the third quarter when Aiden had just sat down, Kelsey said something about how they wanted to see him play, not just dance.  We just happened to be sitting next to the coaches wife who made a quick trip to the other side to talk with Coach Bo.  Thirty seconds later, Aiden was in on offense.  Once I retied the drawstring on his shorts (he was running around the field with one hand holding up his shorts) he was good to go.  He scored a goal, and was charging after the ball until he got tired.  Then he started half-ass running around the field.  I think we will work on conditioning over the winter and in the spring.

Paige was up next.  Like I said, it was cold.  We had all the other kids in our van watching a movie and the grown-ups were taking shifts sitting on the sidelines cheering on Paige.  There was one kid on the other team that was GOOD.  Granted there was only 2 kids from the other team, I think he scored all the goals for the other team.  Our team had one goal.  Guess who scored that….yup, that’s my girl!  Paige was slow going early on, but picked up the pace into the second half.  Proud of her, obviously, and look forward to the spring.  Hopefully we will get a couple more kids on the team that like to play as much as Paige.

We are sad that the season is over, but like Kim said, we WON’T miss the games in 40-50 degree weather….plus wind….

School? Again??

Well, it has been almost two years since I graduated.  I love being home with my family.  Love driving my kids to school and soccer practice/games.  Love getting to be a parent helper in classes.  Love everything about being at home…except one thing.  I HATE not having an income.

Kim mentioned it tonight, too.  She loves having me around, but like me, she wishes there was a little excess cash flow from time to time.  She normally doesn’t say anything…perhaps because she knows I still apply for jobs even though I have no faith that I’ll ever hear back from anyone.  Today’s trip to buy kids clothes may have triggered it though.

So I pull up the college website to see what they have available.  Prior to going back to school I tested and applied for the Nursing program.  Kim loves her job.  I mean it…she LOVES her job.  The actual patient interaction and care, not the politics of everything.  I figured it couldn’t be all bad with how much she enjoys it.  I was in the lower 90-something percentile.  Not bad I thought, but I didn’t get in.  Damn.  So I was thinking a couple weeks ago (when we talked about me going back to school again) that maybe I’d try the nursing thing again, but only so that I could get into the administration side of things.  For a non-profit hospital, those administrators sure make a ton of money.

I don’t know what’s going to happen, but that is part of the joy of life.

10-19-2009

Wow. Tomorrow will be eight years. She has put up with me for almost 12 years, but we’ve been married for 8. Scary.

Well the toothless grins will be leaving our house soon…never to return. Ok, so they will once the kids have kids and if Kim or I lose all our teeth. I love when Finn throws that huge smile out. Ear to ear, all gums, and if you’re lucky he’ll stick the tip of his tongue out there too. Gonna miss that. Finn is still growing by leaps and bounds. Cracks me up, but he is a tummy sleeper. Aiden is the only one that seems to sleep on his back the majority of time.

Paige is finding out just how much she really likes soccer. Two kids have been pulled off the team (WOO HOO!!!) so she is getting to play a bunch. This last week I think she was the only one that was ready to run out on the field at any given point. She scored her team’s only goal in the game. She is learning and loving it. Think it’s time to order those black and pink soccer cleats.

Paige is loving school still. She’s always excited to tell us about her day, especially what she had for snack. She is currently practicing her somersaults.

So game time was looking grim for Aiden on Saturday.  Kim was over watching Paige’s game so I walked Aiden over to his field.  When we got there, like normal, there was only a couple of kids from the team there early warming up.  The other team had all of their players there, and they looked like a good team.  I wish I could say I knew what happened in the first quarter, but I went back to Paige’s game (since I missed last week’s) and Kim went over to Aiden’s (since she missed his last week).  All I know for certain is that Aiden’s team (the Black Cobra’s) scored four times while I was watching and the other team only got one goal in that same time period.  I’m fairly confident we won, but sometimes our boys need a little time to warm up and have gotten behind early in the game the last couple times.  Aiden didn’t score this week, but he was still fearless while playing.  At one point he had the entire other team surround him while he booted the ball out.  We are going to try on some new cleats tonight since he is getting close to growing out of these.  We’ve already got a pair picked out (bright ass orange…his favorite color) but we need to know what size to order.

Aiden is learning a little Spanish every day. He is making friends and loving school.  Cracks me up that he spends most of his playground time before school playing with a group of girls.  He is the only boy in the group.  This could be interesting as he gets older.

Kim is still blogging more often than I am, but I’m waiting for the novelty to wear off.  I think we should probably set a designated time for us to both sit down and blog.  We’ll see what happens.  You can also read hers for the going on’s around here (Link) from another perspective.

10-12-09

So, I haven’t been diligent in updating this blog.  Kim flips me crap about it…so much so that she’s decided to start her own blog.  Ok, so it probably isn’t entirely because of my “lack of updates”, but I’m sure it doesn’t help.  You can find hers over at: nuttymonkeymama.blogspot.com Yes, she decided to follow others into the “easy” way of blogging.  Not that this way was difficult, but again, she is showing her independence from me.  She even stated in her first blog that she didn’t want me to do anything with her blog unless she absolutely needed it.  I’m not going to argue.  I’m excited that people will be able to see things from both of our perspectives.  Of course, there could be some slight downsides to this too.  Perhaps I should start cleaning more?

So much has happened since I last did a decent update.  Kids soccer games, changing of home services, Finn’s everything.  Let’s start as far back as I can remember….well, important things anyway.

Paige is taking to soccer much in the same way Aiden did.  Little slow to figure it out, then WOO HOO.  Three weeks ago (so September 26th) she was learning what she needed to do.  No fits were thrown, but she wasn’t really running after the ball all that much.  Two weeks ago it was cold.  So cold that I was snuggling Aiden under the quilt we keep in the back of the van.  Paige was wearing something like 3 layers and running.  She scored 3 goals (although one was technically just after the halftime whistle) and was SO excited.  She was catching on.  This past week was another 4 goals.  Again, one technically doesn’t count because the ball apparently went out of bounds and she just rolled it back in and kept going.  So she plays by her own rules…big deal.  She’s having fun and it isn’t looking like a complete waste of money.

Aiden’s team has pretty much dominated this season.  The first two games all included a period of time (usually at least half the game) where the other team gets to use an extra player.  Last week was a little funny.  All this year it is supposed to be 4 vs 4, but last week we were short players.  We started out with 5 players, but 2 left at halftime.  I’ll get on my soapbox about that in a minute, but we played the last half of the game 3 vs 3 with no subs for our team.  Aiden scored 3 times, and the other two kids that stuck around also scored once each.  It was a nice change to see kids that don’t normally score often boot that ball in the goal.  At one point there was one kid on our team that had to use the bathroom so it became 2 vs 2.  Good times.  This last week we suffered our first loss….technically.  I don’t see it as a loss considering the fact that there was a dirty player on the other team and the ref wasn’t calling anything.  All in all this kid (#22) shoved Aiden down at least 3 times that I saw, and tripped him twice….one trip ended up with Aiden bracing his fall and really hurting his hand.  Now, granted, he is a crier, but not usually in soccer.  He is very good about hopping back up and shaking it off.  This other kid tripped or shoved people on our team constantly and the side refs kept signaling there was a foul, but all the on field ref did was shrug and mouth “I didn’t see it”.  Well no shit.  The whole point of the side refs is to help the on-field with things she might not see.  We lost by 2 goals, we had 5 out of 8 players, and the dirty kid was allowed to get away with everything.  I did have a conversation with Aiden about when it may be appropriate to push and whatnot in a game, but I also need to try to teach him how to do it without getting caught.  Is that bad?

Ok, the soapbox.  Two kids left Aiden’s soccer game at halftime a couple weeks ago.  One of them had to leave so that he wouldn’t miss his football game.  WTF?  Seriously?  Why would you sign up a kid for two sports in the same season that will have overlapping game times?  Pick one and stick with it.  Maybe he should just play football so that we can get a kid that wants to be at the whole soccer game and help his team?  Especially when we’re already short  people!

Then there is Paige’s team.  There are two kids that don’t seem to want to play….ever.  One kid even had his grandma on the field holding his hand a couple weeks ago.  Then she drug him up and down the field.  WTF is the point in that?  He doesn’t want to be there, he doesn’t want to play, and no matter how much you mimic a foosball player, HE ISN”T PLAYING!!!!  There are kids that enjoy playing and have to sit on the sidelines while we watch this bullshit happen week after week.  Yank him.  Don’t bother bringing him.  Spend the money and buy him a couple new DVDs.  Then he can enjoy them while just sitting motionless, and you won’t have to pretend he’s playing and repeatedly comment to other parents that “he’s not normally like this”.  Bullshit.  He’s been like that since the first practice, and it is NOT going to change.

I’m saving money, and getting better service!

This sucks.  We had 1.5 Mbps DSL service for a few years (I think up to 4-5 years at this point) and I had finally grown tired of the slow speed.  In August I cancelled them out completely and got our local cable company to install cable internet (at 5 Mbps) and digital cable with a Hi-Def DVR.   When that flier showed up about 1 1/2 weeks after the change I was pissed.  Had they just told me I never would have switched.

So I went out to get the mail a couple weeks ago.  Again came the flier from our local phone company that faster DSL was now available in our area.  Ok, time for me to review what we’ve got, and see if I can save money.  We had DirecTV a while back because I slaved in their call center for about 3 1/2 years.  That job sucked.  They payed pretty good for what I did (sat on my butt and answered the phone) and it came with free DirecTV service (top of the line of course), but we cancelled it because I was back in school.  Trying to conserve money and all.  It was cancelled in 2005.  I decided to check and see what it would run for similar service now.

I called DirecTV to make sure I was eligible for the promotions on programming that were currently running, and surprisingly, I was.  So I started calculating.  With the DSL promotion and the DirecTV promotion we could save about $40 a month.  With this we would be getting: more than double the download speed of our cable internet, and getting a LOT more channels.  Wow.  Where is the downside?  Then came the call to get the equipment from DirecTV.  This is where knowing how to work the system comes in.

I call the regular “reconnect” line at DirecTV and get a dumbass (as Red would say).  No really….I haven’t worked at DirecTV in about 4 1/2 years, and I was correcting him on things.  Really dude?  You think you should be doing this job?  He even tried to upsell me on adding Qwest DSL (which I was already doing).  He said, “You can get 1.5 ‘M’ at your house.  Just in case you don’t know the ‘M’ means it is fast.”  LMAO!  Dude, really?  I then spent about 5 minutes informing him what the ‘M’ stood for, and that he was wrong about what the fastest speed available to me was.  Next he pretty much told me what I already knew about the programming costs.  Then I asked about equipment.  I want one HD-DVR and one standard DVR…..free.  ”No, I can’t do that.  Best I can do is HD-DVR free and the other DVR is $99 plus shipping.”  Bite me.  Told him I’d think about it and call back.  I did, too.  I called to see what someone else was willing to do.  Guy number 2 was a little better, but still not willing to eat all the cost on the second DVR.  Ok, I’m done fooling around.  Time to call retention.

I used to work in retention.  I used to joke that the department I worked in was the “Give shit away” department.  Do what it takes to prevent people from cancelling service.  I also did reconnects…guess how those went.  So, I get the “Express line” phone number with pin.  From here I got into CRG and get: $25-32 off of programming for the next 12 months, 6 months of free movie channels, and the HD-DVR and standard DVR for free.  I just paid for shipping.  Then the installer showed up.  CRG guy botched it.  Not only did I get a HD-DVR free, I got 2 HD-DVR’s free.  These are normally $199 a pop.  Cool.  HD-DVR in the bedroom too!  Once it was all hooked up I had to call a couple times to get the programming corrected and discounts applied, but is should be all good now.  And as an added bonus we get $5 a month off because we have DSL too.

Next up was the internet.  Back to what started the DirecTV switch.  Our 5Mb service was $49 a month.  We were getting hosed.  That would get me 20Mb in Portland (where I grew up), but not here.  In any case, we now pay $45 a month (with a free $100 modem) for 12Mb service.  Just got the internet installed today and it is nice.  Can’t wait to see if there is an improvement in Xbox Live….but I highly doubt it.

Moral of the story.  Don’t accept the first representative’s offer.  Work the system.  Learn whom to talk to, and more importantly, how to talk to them.  Never (EVER) be defensive or argumentative.  The saying, “the squeaky wheel gets the grease,” is only accurate when you are literally talking about wheels.  As Dalton would say, “Be nice.”

Well crap

I had typed out a nice long blog about the kids soccer games last week. Spent about 45 minutes typing it out on my iPhone. Then I tried to publish it. Thanks to T-Mobile the Dara transfer was SLOW! This caused the app to crash and the entire post to be erased.

I will try to recreate it soon.

Halo 3:ODST

I think it is fair to say I’m addicted to Halo.  I’m addicted to Xbox 360 games (and pretty much all video games) in general, but Halo has a special place in my world.  With somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,000 matchmade games across at least six different gamertags (with my original clocking the highest at 4,449 matches) in Halo 3 alone, yeah….I’m addicted.

So around a year ago Bungie (the company that makes Halo) mentioned something about a new game coming out. We knew it wouldn’t be Master Chief (main character of Halo: CE, Halo 2, and Halo 3) so it would be a new challenge.  Naturally, being the addict I am, I pre-ordered the new game as soon as I could at my local GameStop.  That was back in May.  The game came out about 1 1/2 weeks ago and I was there at midnight, Monday, September 21, 2009, to pick up my copy.  I got the Halo 3: ODST Collector’s Edition.  Same game, but I got a “limited edition” controller.  Also, because I pre-ordered, I got the code for Sgt. Johnson to use in the new multiplayer mode called “Firefight”.  I also picked up Puma’s copy because the bastard was on a cruise in the Caribbean or somewhere.

The game itself is called Halo 3: ODST.  For those that don’t know, ODST stands for “Orbital Drop Shock Trooper”.  I won’t explain everything because those that will read this either already know or don’t care….like Kim doesn’t care.  So, I get home and boot up.  This came with two discs: one is only Halo 3 multiplayer with all the maps that I’ve paid for already in the last couple years, plus three new maps.  I fired this disc up first to find the skull hidden on each map.  The Xbox 360 has this thing called “Achievements” and as the name suggests, it is a “reward” for doing things in the games.  I am addicted to those blasted achievements popping up the notification that I’ve just earned something.  The fun part of finding the skulls was my partner was someone who works at Bungie.  The bad part was he was at work and didn’t have a headset.  Never realized how difficult it can be to try to accomplish something without being able to communicate very well.  Oh well, we got it done.

Once that was done, he took off for the bar (everyone was celebrating from the studio) so I jumped over to the new disc.  I partnered up with another guy and we started the main game on the ODST disc.  The campaign loaded up and was nice.  I was able to set my controls the way I had them in Halo 3 (naturally) and it was second nature.  It felt like I was controlling Master Chief, but I was missing some little things.  Shield regeneration is gone, dual wielding is gone (being able to shoot two weapons simultaneously), but overall it was comfortable.

Before long, my first buddy was home.  Over to Firefight we go.  There are a couple of games that I’ve played that had this game mode where you fight a number of enemies in each round.  Gears of War 2 had “Horde” mode (the only good thing about that game in my opinion).  Call of Duty: World at War has “Zombie” mode; this was a great addition to a good game already.  So Firefight has: Sets, Rounds, and Waves.  There are five Waves to a Round, and three Rounds to a Set.  Supposedly there are infinite Sets, but I’ve yet to make it to set five.  However, I have made it to Set 4, Round 4, Wave 3, and that took just a hair under 2 1/2 hours.  This game is fun!

Overall, the graphics and gameplay are great in my opinion.  Yes, I’m slightly biased, but I still pay for my games.  The Campaign was a bit too easy, even on Legendary difficulty (the hardest).  The fact that I was able to complete Legendary by myself (Solo is the way to go!) in less time than it took for Halo 3 or Halo 2 left me a bit disappointed.  It doesn’t surprise me much since Halo 3 Legendary was easier than Halo 2 Legendary.  The story itself was interesting, or atleast what I watched of it.  I’m known among my co-op friends to skip cut-scenes at every opportunity.  I still couldn’t tell you what happened at the end of Halo 3.

Somebody asked me the second day I had it if I thought it was worth a buy.  Absolutely.  I paid $100 for the Collector’s Edition (and since controllers usually go for $50 on their own, it was a good deal) and I say Firefight alone is worth it.  Factor in a whole new campaign, the multiplayer maps for Halo 3, and the chance for Recon…..well, that’s just icing on the cake.

For the record the night of 9-21-09 went like this:
2230 – Left for GameStop for the midnight pickup
0004 – Got my copy of Halo 3: ODST Collector’s Edition
0017 – Got home and attempted opening of Halo 3: ODST Collector’s Edition packaging
0022 – Finally got game disc out of box
0023 – Downloaded Sgt. Johnson for Firefight mode using code from GameStop
0025 – Batteries in new controller, Sgt. Johnson downloaded, game disc loaded, started play
B L U R
0530 – Was startled by Aiden bursting into my office with his now dislodged tooth in his hand (surprised he didn’t swallow it!!!)
0540 – Got Aiden back in his bed, and went to bed.

So, I got a good 4 hours in on the first night.  Got up at 1100 and went on with the day.  I would also like to point out that as of today, I have not been up past midnight since last Saturday….that’s some kind of record for me!
