It has been a great long while.  I know…I’m a slacker.  I’m not sure what changed, but it seems like I can’t retain the things I want to blog about.  But there are a few things that have started happening….

Biggest news: Finn is mobile.  He started “crawling” a full 2 months earlier than either of the other two.  The reason it is in quotations is because he isn’t actually crawling.  Instead of being on all fours, Finn has opted to basically do the splits and pull himself around.  I can only imagine that the legs are being utilized as stabilizers so that he doesn’t fall forward or backwards while moving.  I also believe he is doing it this way (and the others didn’t) because of the hardwood floors.  Aiden always had to deal with mostly carpet on the main floor, and Paige started the standing/walking literally when we got the hardwoods installed.  We have a great picture of her standing in the emptied out living room just prior to leaving the house for a few days to have the floors installed…she is very unsure of her balance.  Anyway, Finn is now also pulling himself up on things and cruising around the coffee table.  We’ve rearranged the living room to maximize play space for the kids, and give Finn the most available space to roam.   However, you can usually find him: playing with the DirecTV receiver, playing with either Kim’s purse or his diaper bag in the dining room, or making a dash for my office door (if its open) so that he can get under my desk and play with the powerstrip….since it has the pretty red power light.  Touch on this in a minute.

Next big news?  Aiden is reading up a storm.  He started just a little while ago, but he is the one reading bedtime stories for the most part.  Tonight was the first night he had me read a book in a while.  He wasn’t comfortable reading a big book (although I know he could have read it easily), but filled in things and corrected me a couple times.  So I like to ad-lib occasionally… whoopee.  He is still doing well in school, and we should be getting his next report card on Monday.

Paige is baffling.  How we ended up with a girly-girl is beyond me.  She is in love with being a princess, and big poofy party dresses.  She now has 2, with Mama fixing up another one for her.  She requests to wear them almost daily.  She loves having “pretties” in her hair to go with the dresses too.  She is going to be trouble….I just know it…..

I had a pretty big day last week.  For the first time since before I graduated, I had a job interview.  This meant getting a haircut and shaving my face.  I had cut my hair and shaved my face for the wedding I performed back in late August.  It was untouched since then.  Yes, it was long.  So, I was able to talk Paige into going with me and getting a little trim, and ONLY a little trim.  She was having NO part in a drastic haircut.  She informed me on the way to the salon (yes, I went to a salon) that she has to have long hair so that others “would know she’s a girl!”  We then had the discussion that sometimes boys have long hair, too.  Then I started on the earrings.  I have six, and I wanted to make sure she knew that boys can have those too.  She was a little disappointed that Daddy and Mama both have six holes, and she only has two.  I told her when she was older she could get more holes in her ear.

Back to the job interview.  It was an entry level position with a market research company here.  One of two market research companies here.  These jobs do not open up often, and they are pretty competitive.  How competitive?  I was one of 121 (yes, one hundred and twenty one) applicants.  From that, 46 were instantly rejected due to lack of cover letter or typos in their resume.  So, that 75 of us.  From that group of 75 there about 10 chosen for interviews.  Yes, I was one of about ten to get an interview.  I’ll say it now, I don’t interview well.  I’ve been told by previous bosses and employers that I could sell ice to an Eskimo in the middle of winter.  Again, I admit, I can sell things….but I despise having to sell myself.  That may be part of the problem.  In any case, I’m still a stay at home Daddy.  I’m sad that I didn’t get the job, but thrilled I still get to be home with my kids.  I’d still love to find a way to stay at home AND earn an income.  For the record, I have started writing one book, and have ideas for a few children’s books.  Here’s hoping.

Next up, Kim.  You may recall that Kim had a less than stellar surgical procedure done last summer.  She is still getting bloodwork drawn for tests regularly, and things still aren’t back to normal.  However, she has been cleared for another pregnancy.  No, not for us.  I can’t do that.  When the doctor cleared her on Tuesday, he made the comment about how “one of us was planning on another one” since I had made contradicting statements.  Thankfully, Kim replied with “It wouldn’t be ours”.  Honey, thank you again for not saying “It won’t be his”.  I can only imagine the confusion for the doctor had THAT come out.  Yes, Kim may get to fulfill her desire to surrogate.  She may only get to surrogate once, if at all.  Yes, I am okay with this for a few reasons.  1) She is a happy pregnant woman.  She LOVES being pregnant and doesn’t get mean.  2) It is her body.  I have no right to tell her what she can and cannot do with her body.  I can voice my opinion, and let her know if I’m uncomfortable with something, but I refuse to be the bastard that tries to tell her outright that she cannot do anything.  3) Holy crap!  They pay you HOW MUCH???? 4) There will be no midnight feedings.  I love all three of my kids, but I do NOT miss getting up multiple times a night to feed them.  In fact, I am very much looking forward to not having diapers to change anymore either.

So there you have it.  I think I’ve caught you up to speed, but I know I’ve missed things in there.  Like I just remembered that Aiden has substituted Spanish words in for the English equivalent while reading (thankfully he lets me know that “its the Spanish word for [...]”

Oh yeah, was going to touch on Finn and the powerstrip again.  In my last blog in November I posted something about my router needing to be reset every couple days, and that D-Link needed to update it NOW!  Well, they haven’t officially done that yet.  I did find a beta of their updated firmware and installed it.  Since I installed it (about a month ago) it has never needed to be reset.  Thankfully, it is stable and performing pretty well (only a small reduction in my Wi-Fi reception area???).  I am happy.  One day, Finn decided it needed a reboot.  He scooted in here while I was working on something, and flipped the powerstrip’s “Master Power” switch.  Hmmmm…yeah, I guess that almost two weeks had gone by without a reboot.  Okay.  It has continued to work perfectly…..

10-19-2009

Wow. Tomorrow will be eight years. She has put up with me for almost 12 years, but we’ve been married for 8. Scary.

Well the toothless grins will be leaving our house soon…never to return. Ok, so they will once the kids have kids and if Kim or I lose all our teeth. I love when Finn throws that huge smile out. Ear to ear, all gums, and if you’re lucky he’ll stick the tip of his tongue out there too. Gonna miss that. Finn is still growing by leaps and bounds. Cracks me up, but he is a tummy sleeper. Aiden is the only one that seems to sleep on his back the majority of time.

Paige is finding out just how much she really likes soccer. Two kids have been pulled off the team (WOO HOO!!!) so she is getting to play a bunch. This last week I think she was the only one that was ready to run out on the field at any given point. She scored her team’s only goal in the game. She is learning and loving it. Think it’s time to order those black and pink soccer cleats.

Paige is loving school still. She’s always excited to tell us about her day, especially what she had for snack. She is currently practicing her somersaults.

So game time was looking grim for Aiden on Saturday.  Kim was over watching Paige’s game so I walked Aiden over to his field.  When we got there, like normal, there was only a couple of kids from the team there early warming up.  The other team had all of their players there, and they looked like a good team.  I wish I could say I knew what happened in the first quarter, but I went back to Paige’s game (since I missed last week’s) and Kim went over to Aiden’s (since she missed his last week).  All I know for certain is that Aiden’s team (the Black Cobra’s) scored four times while I was watching and the other team only got one goal in that same time period.  I’m fairly confident we won, but sometimes our boys need a little time to warm up and have gotten behind early in the game the last couple times.  Aiden didn’t score this week, but he was still fearless while playing.  At one point he had the entire other team surround him while he booted the ball out.  We are going to try on some new cleats tonight since he is getting close to growing out of these.  We’ve already got a pair picked out (bright ass orange…his favorite color) but we need to know what size to order.

Aiden is learning a little Spanish every day. He is making friends and loving school.  Cracks me up that he spends most of his playground time before school playing with a group of girls.  He is the only boy in the group.  This could be interesting as he gets older.

Kim is still blogging more often than I am, but I’m waiting for the novelty to wear off.  I think we should probably set a designated time for us to both sit down and blog.  We’ll see what happens.  You can also read hers for the going on’s around here (Link) from another perspective.

09-10-09

Another week is almost in the bag.  That means it is almost time for Kim to go back to work.  We don’t like weekends here…that’s when Mama works.

Aiden and Paige both have soccer games this Saturday.  Paige’s is at 1030 and Aiden’s is at Noon.  This should be interesting with Finn in attendance and Kim attempting to attend both games.  Oh yeah, Kim works Friday and Saturday this week.  She can’t miss Paige’s first soccer game so she’s going to zombie it.

Finn had his 6 month checkup today.  Got weighed, measured, looked over, and received a few shots as a parting gift.  Personally, I’d ask for a refund.  He’s breaking the mold with our kids….he was in the 55th percentile for head circumference.  Ok, that’s not unusual.  In fact, if anything it is a little lower than I expected.  But the bell-curve-wrecking stat is his height.  65th percentile.  The other two tend to hover MUCH lower.  Apparently Finn is going to be the big one of the three.  Helpful, I guess, when you’re the baby of the family.

Aiden had soccer practice tonight, and Kim and Paige attended with him.  I stayed home with Finn since I’m fighting a bitchin summer cold.  When they walked in afterwards I was surprised by how red they both were.  I kind of expected Nutty to be worn out, but Monkey was almost as red in the cheeks!  Thank goodness it wasn’t still 90+ out there or they may have cooked!

As I mentioned, I’ve got a summer cold.  Kim has it now too, and I think we can thank public school for it.  Aiden was sounding like he was going to lose his voice the other day, but then was fine a couple days later (cough medicine once).  Meanwhile, Kim and I will probably be down for a week plus.  Perhaps I should quit smoking….maybe colds wouldn’t linger quite as long.

09-02-09

So Finn is six months old today. Wow. Already?? Aiden is 6 and I remember when he was this small. Time flies.

Well, we woke up and piled into the van this morning so we could go get pictures taken. Finn’s 6 month pictures and hopefully a good one of all three.

We got to the mall about 15-20 minutes before the stores even opened. Spare time anyone? Kim and the kids camped outside Kiddie Kandids and I ventured downstairs on a mission for Kim. She wanted a harvest colors or striped short sleeved onesie for Finn. I goto camp outside Baby Gap. Those who have known me for a while know that I had a hard time with this. Three cute onesies later (no short sleeves to be had) I rejoined the family.

We were hoping for at least a couple good pictures, but ended up getting a bunch. I think all of the pictures were great, but Kim didn’t like a couple of them…I guess hair covering one of Paige’s eyes is wort of a bad thing since we plan on keeping these pictures forever.

After getting a pretzel (2 cinnamon sugar and 2 parmesan) we headed home to grab Aiden’s backpack for school an to drop him off.

Once home Paige and I decided we’d make some cookies. We were going to make good old chocolate chip, but then I saw the Ginger in the cabinet. I mentioned gingersnaps, and Paige asked, “what’s that?” I informed her that they were cookies that Mama makes and she was sold. Only problem, Kim was already working on a project. I checked to make sure we had everything we needed, which we did, then Paige and I started mixing.

Recap so far: I woke up before Kim, Paige and Finn, then we got fabulous pictures, Paige and I made some yummy cookies, Aiden had a great day at school (computer room again), and Finn had a cracker (technically 2 crackers, but the first one dropped and he was PISSED!!!).

Great day all around.

Another week down, and it never ends.

We’re inching closer to school starting.  Nutty and Monkey both start on Tuesday.  I’m excited, scared, and a bit sad.  I know I can’t stop them from growing up, but I wish it would slow down!  I still remember holding them when they were born, and countless times being up with them in the middle of the night feeding them.

Just got interrupted while typing this.  It was Monkey’s new soccer coach.  He got a call a few days ago asking if he’d coach because the other one that was set couldn’t.  Guess who the one that couldn’t coach was.  Yeah…it was me.  Sorry, but I’m not about to leave Tank and Nutty on the sidelines by themselves while I “ref” the game.  Sorry, Nutty would be fine, but at 5 1/2 months old….yeah, not leaving Tank on the sides by himself at a huge park.

I’ve got about half of my old blogs transferred over I think.  I made it through 08/2007….I just realized they went up to 12/2008.  Guess I’m not half way.  Anyway, I found that I wasn’t as diligent in not telling the kids names.  If you read through the old blogs you’ll see that Nutty is actually Aiden and  Monkey is Paige.  You won’t see Tank (since I stopped doing that before he was born), but Tank if Finn.  If I ever get around to posting pictures you’ll see them, plus their names tattooed on either forearm (older two) or on my left leg (Finn).

Yes, I love tattoos.  I went in for one tattoo (upper back partial solar eclipse) and I know have ten tattoos with plans for at least six more.  Yes, PJ, they are addicting.  Don’t believe me?  Go get just one.  I have yet to meet someone with only one tattoo.

Off to shop for soccer cleats for Paige (Aiden still has his that fit) and shin guards for them both.

8-20-09

Attended Open House’s today.  I’m a bit sad.  Nutty’s Kindergarten looks nice, although they will be moving to another building next year.  He is somewhat excited, but Kim and I are very excited for him.  Attended an open house for Monkey, too.  I’m sad about this one.  I couldn’t stop Nutty from attending another year of school, but I’m not ready for two of them to be in school already.

Also, Tank has found his voice.  Apparently his voice is that of a pterodactyl.  No leaky balloon here, full on shrieking!  Also pulled the Johnny Jump-Up out for him.  He was having a grand old time tonight in it.  He was laughing and “jumping” for about 20 minutes tonight.  Maybe that’s why he was ready for bed at 1900?

Just a heads up.  I’m going to post some of my old blogs that I did on MySpace quite a while ago.  I think the most recent one is from December 2008.  I’ll start a new category for you to check out some of my random thoughts from before this thing got going…

8-19-09

The summer is drawing to a close.  I just turned 32, the youngest is rolling over sooner than the previous two did, and my two oldest start school next week.  I’m feeling old.

Tank has been teasing us for a while.  He has been getting on his side for a little while now, but had the usual, “I don’t know where to put my arm and I’m stuck,” syndrome.  Whatever arm was underneath was preventing him from actually rolling over.  Then, one day, I put him on his play-mat (the butterfly) to play for a bit.  Next thing I know, he’s on his stomach.  Then he rolled back to his back.  I don’t think it was until the next day that he rolled to his stomach and then continued the roll to his back.  Yup, he completed his first “log roll”.  Seems like he is trying to catch up to his older brother and sister and is determined to be mobile however he can.  Kim just tried to put him down for a nap, and he was making quite a bit of noise.  When I went in to give him his pacifier I found that not only was he turned 90 degrees from how gets put in the crib, but he was also on his stomach.  Life is going to get interesting soon.

Monkey starts her first round of preschool on Tuesday.  My little princess is going to school.  I am so not ready for this.  Yes, it is only a couple hours a day for two days a week, but it is the first step.  She is still obsessed with My Little Pony, so much in fact that when she and Nutty play superheroes she is “Pony Girl”.  She doesn’t seem to excited for school yet, but we’ll see how much that changes in the near future.  She has also fully incorporated herself into Nutty’s Xbox time.  As long as a game that allows 2 people has been selected, she’s on it.  She has her own controller and knows exactly where I keep it.

Nutty is getting ready to start Kindergarten.  Wow.  I have a child in elementary school.  Not much is going on with him lately.  He’s still building all sorts of new creations with his Legos, and has a knack for leaving the small ones on the rug in the living room.  You know, the ones that blend in and you don’t see until you step on them barefoot.  He is a great big brother and is always looking out for his little sister and little brother.

Kim is starting to feel like her old self.  She has a bit of pain in her abdomen, but it is believed that it is just residual pain from the bile leakage which should get better over time.  She is slowly getting back to her normal routine, and will hopefully be as close to 100% as possible.  I don’t think she’ll ever be the same, but she married me so I already know she’s “off” a bit.

7-19

Wow, what a week.  We’re prepping for Kim’s gallbladder surgery that is tomorrow.  She isn’t supposed to eat or drink after midnight; which is pretty common for a surgery.  However, Kim’s surgery isn’t until early afternoon.  All in all it would be around 18 hours with no food or water.  The biggest problem is that she is still nursing Tank and needs to hydrate.  There was some “joking” at work with her co-workers about starting an I.V. saline drip.  We’ll see what happens.

Also this week was poor Nutty’s losing his voice.  He got that back and has been fine since, but Tank starting acting funny.  We thought that maybe he’d caught what Nutty had and was getting a sore throat, but we hit him with some Infant Tylenol for his fever and he was fine.  So then on Friday night we’d see how Tank  did that night and possibly take him into the doctor during Saturday hours if need be.

Kim got a call from work at dinner time on Friday.  She’d been given a mandatory A-Day.  That means she doesn’t go into work, she is home on Available.  So if they need her they’d call her and she’d have to come in.  This was actually ok because she was debating about trying to get one for Friday night because Tank was sick.  This A-Day proved VERY beneficial for me.  I’m a sympathy puker.  I can’t handle vomiting (except during childbirth for some reason).  About 10 minutes after she got after the phone with work, Monkey looked at Kim at the table and said she didn’t want to eat her dinner anymore.  Then she turned to her left (clearing the table) and let loose.  Again, thankfully, Kim was home.  She was able to handle that.

Yesterday morning Tank was doing ok when he was medicated, but was obviously not himself otherwise.  He still had a fever so we piled in the car and drove him to the doctor’s Saturday hours.  We were both really happy we took Tank down because we found out that Tank had his first ear infection.  Great.  I dropped everyone at home and went to get Tank’s antibiotic prescription filled.  He has now had three doses, and is getting back to his old self.  He is smiling and happy, but not on Tylenol or Ibuprofen anymore.  Looking forward to having my good old Tank back.

So Kim’s parents are going to be here in a couple hours.  They are coming out to help out with the kids while Kim is recouping from surgery.  The kids have been asking if it is Sunday all week.  They are more than a little excited to see their grandparents.

Tomorrow is the day for Kim…normally people would be nervous or uneasy going into a surgery.  Given that Kim is a nurse…well, she seems to be fine.  One thing I’ve learned over the years is that when it comes to medical things, if Kim isn’t worried, then I don’t worry.

Week 2 post-maternity

Tank is only 3 months old, but I’m pretty sure he’s trying to kill me.  Last night was very difficult, and I should have seen it coming.  Week 1 was a tad too easy on me.  He woke up to eat when I expected him to, and fought me a little bit, but overall it was pretty easy.  Yeah, not going to happen two weeks in a row.

Last night at 1900 Tank was getting VERY angry.  He was done.  He’d been awake for a while and was apparently ready to eat…even though he ate at 1800.  So I hold him, and after 30 minutes we head upstairs to put Nutty and Monkey in the tub.  I have Tank in his bouncy while I wash the kids, then let them play.  After that I get the bottle going.  Tank PLOWS through almost two ounces of his milk and racks out.  Older kids in bed; I head downstairs.

I usually play Halo or Call of Duty as soon as the kids are in bed, but with Tank in the house now I wait about an hour to make sure he is, in fact, asleep.  Then I jump on.  Well, at around 2200 Tank wakes up.  I stop mid-match (only died once while I was gone) and head up to re-wrap him and give him his binki.  Play for another hour, he wakes up again.  Ok, I call it a night for gaming.  I head up and give him his binki again, then I head down and prep his bottle for middle of the night feedings.  Well, the binki didn’t suffice this time.  After trying to get him to go back to sleep for 30 minutes or so I cave and come down to get his bottle.  The only problem is that I didn’t want to use his bottle that I’d already prepared in case he still woke up twice more.  So I make a bottle of just formula and he plows through it and crashes out again.  Cool.  I can handle that.

I head up to bed.  I’m laying there watching the clock hit 0100, 0200, 0300, 0400….with Tank waking up at 0130 to eat again (seriously???), and at many many MANY various times in the night.  I think I got out of bed more than I was in it last night.  Should have just brought him into our room, but I don’t want any “accidental latching’s” in the middle of the night.  In any case, I doze off after seeing 0500 on the clock (ouch).  I had dozed off a couple times, but never got to sleep longer than maybe 20 minutes at a time before waking up to Tank or that weird gasping-for-air-body-jerk-thing.  Not sure what that is, maybe I should look into that.  Anyway, doze off after 0500…Tank wakes me up at 0545 to eat again.  Feed him and notice that it is starting to get light out.  Crap.

Head back to bed and I pass out.  WOO HOO!!! SLEEP!!! Yeah, that victory is short lived.  0630 I head back into Tank’s room and carry him back to our bed.  He’s just eaten so my nipples are safe.  At this point I start playing the “where’s Tank’s binki” like it is a snooze button on the alarm clock.  I remember hearing Kim come into the room to feed Tank this morning around 0800.  Then I’m not sure what happened next….

Kim asked me how the night went.  I could hear myself answer her before passing out.  A little while later she asked me again, so either I answered her in my head or I mumbled so badly she couldn’t understand me.  My wonderful, fabulous, caring wife then let me sleep an extra hour.  I think I said something along the lines of, “I just woke up from the longest period of sleep I got” and she had some pity for me.  Well, I wasn’t aware of what was happening.  I woke up and looked at the clock and saw 0900.  I was so tired I could have easily just gone back to sleep, which I almost did, but thankfully I thought…”Wait, she works tonight.  Why isn’t she in bed??”   I jumped up and got dressed so I could go save her from the couch.  While in the closet picking a shirt she came upstairs to go to bed.

Needless to say, I think Tank was just messing with me last night.  He better not do that again tonight or he’s grounded.

Post Maternity First Night

So, last night was Mama’s first night back at work.  She really didn’t want to go, and we didn’t want her to go.  It is a difficult thing watching your spouse go back to work while you stay home.  Some people know this, others don’t, but it is the hardest thing in the world for me right now.  I know my wife loves her job, and even if we won the lottery she’d still work here and there.  Not all the time, part-time, but just enough to keep her nursing license current.  If that were the case I’d be okay with it…it is the fact she HAS to work.  I’d be fine if she was going to work because she wanted to…hell, I’d need time away from me too if that were possible.

Anyway, so around 1945 it was time to get the big kids ready for bed.  So up we all went…bathroom, pj’s, teeth brushing, time for stories.  Tank hung out on sister’s bed and watched the ceiling fan while we read stories.  Not a peep, other than the small conversation with the fan.  Big kids get hugs and kisses, then tucked in, and off go the Tank and I to his room.

Twenty feet away we hit Tank’s room.  Fresh diaper and PJ’s and time to eat.  For the first 5 minutes it was exactly what I expected…he screamed at me.  Much like Monkey, Tank wanted Mama.  He’s taken a bottle before, but not at bedtime.  So, then all of a sudden something odd happened…he stopped.  Tank stopped screaming at me after 5 minutes and started chowing down.  All three kids were in bed by 2015.  Wow.

Tank woke up at 0100 to eat, at 0315 for his binki, and at 0530 to eat again.  About what I expected, however, it was the 0645 wake up call that I wasn’t ready for.  Rise and shine, got out of the bed I had no room in.  Yeah, Nutty and Monkey came and got in bed with me around 0300 and by the 0530 feeding I had around 8 inches of bed…along the edge.

All in all it was a great night for us.  Hopefully, tonight goes just as smooth….
