A few years ago I had friends like Dan and Jamie that were my “Computer Geek Buddies”.  They knew about things like: home networks, wireless network security, odd little tidbits about Windows, how to build websites/computers, etc.  Hmmm…

In the last couple years I have:

1) Successfully setup a wireless home network (including the Wii) that uses WPA security, MAC filtering, and has all the normal things like file and printer sharing.

2) Figured out lots of little tricks about Windows XP and Vista.

3) Upgraded numerous small parts in the desktop and my laptop (Kim’s laptop has thus far gone unscathed).

4) Learned how to build a website (ours should be up in the next month or two…depending on when I register the name and sit down to design it).

5) Found it fun to make a spreadsheet in Excel at any opportunity (usually to calculate what my grade will be given the scores for my papers).

6) Become determined to build our next desktop (for the fun of it and to say that I built it).

7) Become a person that people call when they have computer, car stereo, general electronics questions/problems/what to know what they should buy.

In short (yes this list has been shortened), I have become a geek.  How the fuck did this happen?  Yesterday I decided to dual-boot the Alienware…for the hell of it.  Partitioned the hard drive (I upgraded a couple months ago from 80gb to 160gb) and installed Vista on the new portion.  Updated drivers, reinstalled the programs so that they can be used on both operating systems…etc.  Main reason for it…so I could play the chess game that is on Vista.  I’ve become a geek, but at least I wear Jordans and jeans/shorts instead of Dockers with loafers.
